My Recovery Journey: How I Overcame Adversity and Found Hope

Updated: Mar 16

Have you ever felt lost in a world of pressure and expectation? Did you know that nearly 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experience mental illness? Recovery is not just a process; it's a transformative journey that can lead to newfound strength and hope. In this blog post, we will explore the highs and lows of my personal recovery journey, the lessons I've learned, and how you too can find your path toward healing and restoration. You'll discover practical strategies for overcoming adversity, the importance of Christ-centered mental health coaching, and how the RENEW program can be a tool in your own journey of self-discovery and growth.

Understanding the Nature of Recovery

Every recovery journey is unique, shaped by personal experiences, challenges, and victories. To understand my recovery path, it's essential to first grasp what recovery truly means. It's not merely the absence of mental illness but a holistic transformation. Recovery encompasses emotional, spiritual, and physical aspects, guiding individuals toward a fulfilling and purposeful life.

1. My Descent into Darkness

Reflecting on my past, there was a time when I felt engulfed by despair. The pressures of life, coupled with unhealed trauma and a pattern of not prioritizing my relationship with God, left me adrift. It’s common for many facing similar struggles to wonder if they are truly alone. During those moments not having a rrelationship with God can exacerbate feelings of isolation.

2. The Initial Steps to Recovery

The first step in my recovery journey was recognizing that I could no longer navigate this path alone. Reaching out for help can be daunting, but it was the most crucial step I took. Faith played a pivotal role in this stage, but to be totally honest, it took me a while too fully understand the significant importance in my recovery journey. Engaging with mental health professionals helps me confront the underlying issues that had previously immobilized me. While grounding myself in my faith,  rebuilding my relationship with God, and learning how to truly surrender my life to Him was the missing piece that gives me freedom from my past.

### The RENEW Program: A Beacon of Hope

As I delved deeper into my healing process, I began to feel a tugging in my spirit telling me that I needed to do something to help others who are struggling with mental health conditions and trauma.  This  is how the RENEW: 4-Phase Renewing of Your Mind Signature Coaching Program came to be.  This structured program focuses on empowering individuals to reclaim their thought patterns, feelings, and actions by integrating biblical principles with practical coaching techniques. Here's a breakdown of the four phases:

PHASE 01: Building a Strong Foundation: Faith and Identity

In this module we will talk about how our foundation, whether founded on the world or on Jesus, coupled with our life experiences develops our identity.

MODULE 0NE - FOUNDATION: Jesus/Bible vs World

MODULE TWO - EXPERIENCES - Upbringing/home environment, trauma, abuse, addiction, mental health, etc.

MODULE THREE - IDENTITY - “Who am I based on foundation and experiences?”

PHASE 02: Caterpillar and the Molting Process - Unveiling Ourselves: Breaking Free from Limiting Beliefs

MODULE ONE - In this module we will begin peeling back the layers of our life experiences.

MODULE TWO - We will begin the process of changing our unhealthy thought processes (renewing your mind - Romans 12:2),

MODULE THREE - creating healthy boundaries, and

MODULE FOUR - begin building our recovery toolbox.

PHASE 03: Chrysalis - Your Circle Matters

MODULE ONE - In this module we will talk about how, when a caterpillar is preparing to transform into a butterfly, it forms a Chrysalis around itself. This Chrysalis provides a protective covering within which the caterpillar breaks down and then transforms into a butterfly. When we relate this Chrysalis to our recovery and healing our chrysalis is going to represent our support system. We will discuss the importance of surrounding ourselves with people we can trust.

MODULE TWO - People we can lean on for support.

MODULE THREE - People who will offer us encouragement founded on scripture.

MODULE FOUR - People who will pray with and for us.

PHASE 04: Soaring to New Heights: Embracing Freedom and Purpose

In this module we will talk about how, just as a butterfly stretches its wings in order to to fly free, our recovery and healing journey is going to require a lot of stretching. Recovery is a journey, not a destination. This is where we will take time to:

MODULE ONÈ - solidify our new foundation, new identity,

MODULE TWO -  learn to apply our recovery toolbox and begin to walk in freedom.

MODULE THREE - We will discover how we can use our recovery and healing journey to become the hands and feet of Jesus.

### Building a Supportive Community

Recovery isn’t solely about individual effort; it also requires a robust support system. I found immeasurable strength in community. Surrounding myself with individuals who shared similar experiences created a sense of belonging and accountability. Surrounding myself with people who have a strong foundation of faith who can encourage and support me, will lead me closer to Jesus, and will pray with and for me created accountability to my faith and biblical wisdom from people who are grounded in God's truth. Here are some aspects to consider when building your support network:

Peer Recovery Support

Peer recovery support is an integral part of mental health recovery. Engaging with others who have navigated their journeys fosters an environment of empathy and understanding. Nothing compares to hearing someone say, “I understand what you are going through.”

**Finding a Therapist. Together, my therapist and I explore various strategies for mental wellness and we dig through the trenches of past traumatic life experiences.

Create Accountability

Engaging in regular check-ins with family and friends (as long as they are safe people for me to confide in)  helps me remain accountable. Sharing my goals with others not only heightens my commitment to my recovery but also invites them into my journey.

### Overcoming Setbacks

Recovery isn’t linear; it's a journey filled with peaks and valleys. I encounter setbacks that test my faith and resolve. Here are a few strategies I utilize when faced with challenges:

Practice Self-Compassion

Learning to forgive myself is challenging yet necessary. I often lean on the truth that God's grace is sufficient for me (2 Corinthians 12:9). By reframing setbacks as growth opportunities, I began embracing the lessons learned rather than feeling defeated.

Consider working with a Mental Health Coach and Peer Recovery Specialist

Working with a Mental Health Coach changes the focus away from talking about the specifics of your trauma and mental health diagnoses to talking about building a life that you love and brings you genuine peace and joy in spite of your past trauma or current mental health struggles.

  • DISCLAIMER : A Mental Health Coach is not a Licensed Medical Professional. Mental Health Coaching should not take the place of seeking professional help from a licensed Psychologist and/or Psychiatrist when necessary.

** Join Redeemed & Restored Recovery's RENEW: 4-Phase Signature Coaching Program for both group and individual support.

**After completion of the program you will have full access to Revisit the RENEW Program materials.

During challenging times, returning to the RENEW strategies provides guidance for recalibrating  mindset. Whether it is revisiting affirmations or engaging in deeper scriptural study, Revisiting the program is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Engage in Prayer

Prayer became my lifeline. It was through prayer that I developed a deeper connection with God, inviting Him into my struggles. By burdening my worries and fears to Him, I garnered comfort in knowing I wasn't alone on this journey.

### The Importance of Self-Care

In my pursuit of recovery, I realized the significance of self-care. Beyond meeting emotional needs, prioritizing physical well-being was essential. Integrating regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and adequate rest transformed my overall mental health. Here are some self-care practices that proved effective:

1. Exercise

Engaging in physical activity floods the body with endorphins, boosting mood and reducing stress. Whether a walk, yoga session, or an aerobics class, movement was an integral part of my recovery plan.

2. Nutrition

Eating a balanced diet is paramount for mental clarity. Nutritional choices play a significant role in how we feel. I invested time in learning about foods that boost mood and energy, fuelling my body positively.

3. Mindfulness

Practicing mindfulness techniques, such as meditating on Scripture and breathing techniques, allows you to reconnect with the present. Grounding yourself in the Word helps mitigate anxiety and stress, making challenges more manageable.

### Celebrating Milestones

As I progressed in my recovery journey, I learned the importance of celebrating milestones. Each achievement, no matter how small, was a testament to my resilience and commitment to healing. Here are ways to celebrate:

1. Journaling

Keeping a recovery journal enables you to document significant moments throughout your journey. Reflecting on your progress captures your progress and allows you to see how far you have come.

2. Sharing Stories

Engaging with others by sharing your stories offers inspiration and encouragement. Whether through blog posts, social media, or community events, storytelling builds connections and fosters hope in those still grappling with adversity.

3. Setting New Goals

After reaching a recovery milestone, setting new goals fuels your  growth. Goals offer direction and purpose, reminding you that the journey of recovery is ongoing.
